For owners of Nikon digital SLR cameras, Capture NX-D is certainly a program that can come in handy for processing the workflow of Nikon RAW images.
About ViewNX-i & Capture NX-D This package installs Nikon’s free ViewNX-i and Capture NX-D software and updates it to the latest version. There is no need to download separate installers for each application if you intend to use these two products together. Capture NX-D is optimal for processing and adjusting RAW images with the NEF or NRW file extension, allowing for greater ease of use and convenience. This free application has been specifically created for images captured with your Nikon camera, whether it’s a DSLR, a Nikon 1 interchangeable camera or a COOLPIX compact camera. Capture NX-D can only open RAW (NEF, NRW), JPEG, and TIFF image files. If non-supported files are selected at the same time, only the supported images can be opened with Capture NX-D. You can select images in the Photo Tray; however, if you select multiple images and launch Capture NX-D, only the folder that contains the first image will open. Capture NX-D is designed for a broad range of Nikon camera users wanting to use a variety of functions to develop RAW images taken with their cameras (NEF/NRW). Capture NX 2 will no longer be updated, Capture NX-D can be considered a successor to Capture NX 2.
As an official product from Nikon, Capture NX-D is a capable app which includes a very user-friendly interface that can help photographers deal with the images that their cameras create. From support for NEF raw files to lens and profile corrections to general editing features, this application is a completely free alternative to more expensive options like Adobe Lightroom.
After following the rather long installation process, Nikon Capture NX-D opens up an interface which includes a general preview of the current working image after detecting the currently connected storage medium such as external hard drives or a memory card in a tree view. Like any competent image editor, it can convert your raw images to JPEG or TIFF images for full compatibility with other applications and the web; users can specify the end image resolution and other customization options.
For touching up images and changing their parameters, Capture NX-D can apply a number of color corrections, gamma, sharpness, brightness/contrast and a slew of other modifications photographers often make to their final RAW images. The NX-D tool also provides a retouch brush, though it's certainly not as good as the tool provided in Lightroom.
In our final assessment, Nikon Capture NX-D is a tool that's great for Nikon users getting involved in photography at a beginner level to learn the ropes and make some basic image changes to NEF files and export them but it isn't as comprehensive as some other tools which support a wider range of RAW image formats.
